Liver Elastography (MRE)

Advanced non-invasive test for liver stiffness and fibrosis

At IMAGES Diagnostic Center in Kuwait, we provide Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) — an advanced imaging technique that measures liver stiffness caused by fibrosis and inflammation, especially in patients with chronic liver disease.

Unlike a traditional liver biopsy, MRE is fast, safe, and non-invasive, giving doctors a complete picture of the liver’s condition without needles or surgery. It is part of our MRI liver examination.

When Would You Need an MRE?

Your doctor may recommend an MRE if:

  • You have a history of chronic liver disease (such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver disease, or NASH).
  • You are at risk of liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.
  • Your doctor needs to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for liver disease.
  • You need a more reliable alternative to liver biopsy.
  • You have abnormal blood tests, ultrasound, or prior imaging suggesting liver damage.
How Does it Work?

MRE combines MRI with low-frequency vibrations to measure tissue stiffness:

  • A special pad is placed on your body to send gentle vibrations to the liver.
  • The MRI system processes wave patterns to create a visual map (elastogram) showing liver stiffness.
  • A contrast agent (Primovist™ – gadoxetate disodium) may be used in some cases to better detect and characterize abnormal liver changes.
What To Expect

Before Your Scan

  • Inform us if you have metal implants, pacemakers, or kidney problems.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing (you may change into a gown).
  • You will be required to fast for 4 hours.

During

  • You will lie on the MRI table with a small pad on your abdomen.
  • Gentle vibrations are applied to the liver while MRI images are taken.
  • The exam is painless and usually lasts 20–30 minutes.

After

  • You may return to normal activities right away.
  • Results are analyzed by a specialized radiologist and shared with your doctor within 3–5 hours.
Risks
  • MRE is considered very safe.
  • No radiation is involved.
  • Contrast (if used) is generally safe, but not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.
FAQs
What is liver elastography (MRE)?

It is an advanced MRI-based test that measures liver stiffness to detect fibrosis and inflammation, offering a non-invasive alternative to liver biopsy.

Most MRE scans take about 20–30 minutes.

Yes. It is safe, painless, and does not use radiation. It is suitable for most patients with suspected liver disease.

In many cases, yes. MRE provides a full view of the liver, unlike biopsy which samples a small area. However, your doctor may still recommend biopsy in certain cases.

At IMAGES, MRE scans start from 160 KWD. Contact us for exact pricing and insurance details.

We work with most Kuwaiti and international insurers. Verify coverage with our billing team before visiting our Jabriya, Salmiya, or Hawally locations.

Most results are delivered within hours (not days), helping doctors and patients make timely care decisions.
