Bone Density – DEXA Scan

Accurate, low-dose imaging for osteoporosis detection and bone health monitoring

At IMAGES Diagnostic Center in Kuwait, we provide DEXA scans (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry), the most reliable method for measuring bone mineral density and comprehensive body composition analysis. This painless, low-radiation test helps detect osteoporosis, osteopenia, and fracture risk early, while also providing detailed measurements of lean muscle mass, fat distribution, and body fat percentage, so you and your doctor can take action before problems occur and optimize your overall health.

Before

  • Stop taking calcium, Vitamin D, iron, or osteoporosis medications 48 hours before your appointment.
  • Bring a list of your current medications with you.
  • Do not have any contrast studies or nuclear medicine tests within 15 days prior.
  • If there is any chance of pregnancy, the appointment will be rescheduled.
  • Wear loose clothing without metal (zippers, clasps, snaps) over the lower abdomen and hips.

During

  • Arrive 20–30 minutes early for registration.
  • Patients under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Inform staff if you have metallic implants or a possible pregnancy.
  • A technologist will review your medical history and medications before the scan.
  • You may need to change into a gown and remove all metal/plastic objects from the scan area (watches, belts, jewelry).
  • You will lie flat on a padded table while the scanner passes over the spine, hips, or forearm to measure bone density.
  • If a whole-body scan is requested, all metal items must be removed and the scan will cover the entire body from head to toe.

The scan is painless and typically takes 20–30 minutes.

After

  • You can resume all normal activities and medications immediately.
  • A board-certified radiologist interprets the scan.
  • Your doctor receives the results within 1 hour.
  • Reports are also available through our secure patient app.

Whole Body Composition

A scan that uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone, fat, and muscle accurately. It’s a safe, precise way to assess body composition, track fitness, and detect osteoporosis.
Book Scan

Central DEXA Scan

Measures bone density (BMD) in the spine and hip. This is the most accurate and widely used type of DEXA scan for diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing fracture risk in critical areas.
Book Scan

Peripheral DEXA Scan

Measures BMD in smaller bones such as the wrist, heel, or finger. These scans are less detailed than central DEXA but can be useful for screening, or when central scans are not feasible.
Book Scan

DEXA uses very low-dose radiation (less than a chest X-ray).

Safe for most people; not recommended during pregnancy.

No side effects after the scan.

FAQs
How much does a DEXA scan cost in Kuwait?

At IMAGES Diagnostic Center, DEXA scans cost 35 KWD. Whether it’s a central, peripheral, or whole body composition DEXA Scan

A DEXA scan provides two key scores:

  • T-score compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult.

    • Normal: above -1

    • Osteopenia: between -1 and -2.5

    • Osteoporosis: below -2.5

  • Z-score compares your bone density to people of the same age, sex, and body size.
Your doctor will explain what your scores mean for your bone health and fracture risk.

DEXA is very safe. It uses extremely low radiation (less than a chest X-ray). There are no side effects, and you can return to normal activities immediately after the test. It is not recommended during pregnancy unless medically necessary.

No. A DEXA scan is designed to measure bone density and body composition. It does not detect cancer. If cancer or tumors are suspected, other imaging tests such as MRI, CT, or PET scans are required.

The Hip – to assess the risk of hip fractures.
Spine (lower back/lumbar spine) – to detect early signs of bone loss.
Forearm – used if the hip or spine can’t be scanned (e.g. due to implants or deformities).
Whole Body Composition – used to measure the body’s fat, muscle, and bone mass. It provides a detailed analysis of the full body composition.
