When Would You Need a Cardiac CT?
Your doctor may recommend a Cardiac CT if:

What To Expect
Before Your Scan
- Avoid caffeine and smoking for at least 12 hours before your test.
- Do not eat or drink (except water) for 8 hours before the scan.
- Bring a list of your current medications.
- Inform us if you: Have kidney disease, asthma, or allergies to contrast dye. Or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
During
- A contrast dye is injected through a vein in your arm to highlight blood vessels.
- You will lie on the CT table while the scanner quickly captures images of your heart.
- Sometimes, a medication is given to slow your heart rate for clearer imaging.
- The scan itself usually takes 10–15 minutes.
After
- Resume your normal diet and activities immediately.
- Drink plenty of fluids to flush out the contrast dye.
- A board-certified radiologist interprets your images, and your doctor receives a detailed report within 24 hours.
Risks
- Cardiac CT involves a small dose of radiation.
- Contrast dye is generally safe but may cause mild side effects (warm sensation, nausea).
- Rarely, allergic reactions or kidney effects can occur.
- Not recommended for pregnant women unless medically essential.
